Long answer: Green Hen Farm is a young, small-scale, eco-friendly farmerette-owned & operated flower farm, growing on under 1/4 acre in Sewickley, PA, offering fresh seasonal flowers & handmade dried floral gifts. The owner, Selina Courtney (AKA 'The Hen') grew up (human) on a farm, and has a background in floral design and garden center management as well as a lifetime of creating in various art forms.

WHEN?

Short answer: May-Oct

Long answer: We grow our flowers in zone 6b, seasonally, without greenhouses. We pride ourselves for growing some unusual beauties, that you'll rarely find at a traditional flower shop.

HOW DO WE GROW?

GHF is committed to being kind to the environment, especially to our all-important pollinators! Here are some of the sustainable, environmentally friendly farming methods we use in our everyday farming:

Low-till method - reduces erosion and runoff, maturing the soil and improving soil structure to allow for better water absorption.
On-farm green manure cover crops.
Shared-farm and on-farm compost & biological fertilizers - using animal husbandry to provide manure for composting, reducing reliance on bagged soil amendments.
Nature’s Good Guys, & other all-natural, and biorational (pesticide-free) pest control products – safe for the environment.
Heavy mulching - prevents weeds while utilizing natural resources—cardboard, straw, & wood chips.
On-farm propagation & locally sourced supplies.
Reduced reliance on plastic - using compostable seed starters, and reusing plastic containers for many, many years.

Thankfully, many methods exist to support environmentally friendly farming. GHF looks forward to improving its farming methods as often as possible to be as green as possible.

Because being a good steward of the environment is crucial to sustainability! GHF believes farming isn’t merely a job—it’s a sanctuary where the rhythm of nature and the labor of nurturing the earth create an intrinsic sense of peace...aaand if we want to continue to be peaceful, we MUST take care of our environment. GHF strives to farm responsibly, to help reduce our overall carbon footprint, and to create sales platforms accessible to the community that support locally based botanical businesses.
